Sciatica nerve pain can be debilitatingly painful; anyone who has ever had it can tell you that. The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back through your buttock and hip, into the back of your leg. This nerve is extremely sensitive and when it becomes impinged upon or pinched, the pain can be agonizing. This nerve can become pinched by a spinal disc at it exits the spinal column. Commonly the cause is a herniated disc, but only a doctor’s thorough examination can say for sure. A disc is herniated when it’s soft insides bulge past its protective outer layer. The bulge can put pressure on a neighboring nerve. Your doctor will take x-rays to diagnose it.Another cause of the sciatic pain can involve the piriformis muscle is located deep in the hip and is directly over the sciatic nerve. Again, a doctor should be the one to diagnose the cause.
The pain of a pinched sciatic nerve is remarkable for its intensity. Although the nerve is pinched commonly at the spine the pain manifests itself in the leg. Pain can radiate all the way down the back of the leg all the way down to the foot. The pain is usually on one side only but that’s enough to lay a person out until it’s goes away or treatment is sought. Sitting or standing may be unbearable so it’s best to lay down as much as you can, take the medications your doctor has recommended and test whether ice or heat makes it feel better. If your particular sciatic nerve pain is open to chiropractic treatment then your chiropractor is likely to consider adjustments, ice/cold therapy or ultrasound.
